Tantalum is a lustrous, blue-gray, ductile, hard metal which is highly resistant to corrosion. It is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity.
The main use of tantalum is in the production of electronic components, mainly capacitors and some high-power resistors. It is also used to make alloys to increase strength, ductility, melting points and corrosion resistance.
Tantalum oxide (tantalum pentoxide, Ta2O5) is used to make capacitors and to make glass with a high index of refraction. Tantalum carbide (TaC) is a component of material which is used on the cutting edges of high-speed machine tools.
