Niobium, formerly columbium, is a shiny, white, soft, and ductile metal, and takes on a bluish tinge when exposed to air at room temperatures for a long time. It resembles the element tantalum physically and chemically.
Niobium is used mostly as an alloying agent to produce high-temperature-resistant alloys or special steel. Super alloys containing niobium are widely used in various superconducting materials.
Niobium reacts with most nonmetals at high temperatures and forms different niobium compounds such as oxides, sulfides, halides, nitrides and carbides.
